HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGIST

Locations: Any Æ office

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. has immediate openings for Historical Archaeologists. These are regular, full-time positions at the Associate and Senior levels. Ongoing projects are located throughout central and southern California.

Pay Range: $29 - $44/hour

Duties:

Historical Archaeologists have an interest in 19th and 20th century archaeological research issues and material culture. As part of the Historical Archaeology Program, they perform or assist in development and implementation of project research designs and treatment plans; supervise field and laboratory staff; author technical reports; maintain project schedules and budgets; and contribute to proposal preparation.

Skill Requirements:  

  • Experience performing investigations at historic period sites, performing archival research, preparing technical reports;

  • Experience in analysis of historical materials and use of Harris Matrix recording system. 

  • Knowledge of Federal regulations (e.g., NHPA, NEPA, ARPA) and familiarity with cultural resource laws including California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA);

  • Understanding of GIS/database integration and use of digital tools and processes in field and laboratory settings;

  • Reliability, strong written and oral communication skills; and strong work ethic.

    Senior Requirements

  • Conduct and direct research, analysis, and resource investigation;

  • Prepare, review, and ensure quality technical reports and documentation;

  • Proven supervisory experience of field projects, field staff, and project management on multiple sites; and

  • Ability to function as a leader and integral team member.

Education and Experience:

  • M.A. degree in history, historical archaeology, or related field required. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification preferred.

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's (SOI’s) Professional Qualification Standards in architectural history.

  • Minimum of 3 years (Associate) or 7 years (Senior) of field supervisory or management experience in CRM.

  • Varied experience in some or all preferred: urban environments, military sites, homesteads, mining sites, or similar.

  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification preferred.
